How do I translate my Chinese driver licence for an SA licence in Adelaide?
If you are in Adelaide and need your Chinese driver licence translated for a South Australian licence application, AO Translation provides a recognised NAATI-certified Chinese-to-English translation service. South Australia accepts NAATI translations that meet its original-document and stamp requirements, as set out in the SA Government's overseas licence transfer guidance1.
Our standard translation costs A$25 per licence and is usually emailed within 12 hours as a PDF, with the translator's declaration and NAATI digital stamp.
If you become a permanent resident of South Australia, you must obtain an SA licence within 90 days.2 On a temporary visa, you can drive on a current Chinese licence while eligible, carrying the original licence with an English translation or an International Driving Permit and following its vehicle-class limits and conditions.1
What translation format does South Australia accept?
For licence transfer, SA requires an original English translation. A translation by a NAATI-approved translator must have either the translator's stamp and signature or a NAATI digital stamp with a QR code. These are the official translation requirements1.
Keep the supplied translation intact, including its certification and QR code where present, and take your original Chinese licence. A digital-stamp option does not by itself establish that showing a PDF on your phone is sufficient at the counter; check presentation requirements with Service SA before your visit.
How does my visa or residency status affect the deadline?
If you become a permanent resident of South Australia, the SA driving guidance2 says you must obtain an SA licence within 90 days. Arrange your translation and transfer steps early enough to meet that deadline.
Students, visitors and workers on temporary visas can use a current overseas licence while eligible, subject to its vehicle classes and conditions. For a non-English licence, carry it with an English translation or an International Driving Permit, as explained in the SA residency and visitor rules1. A temporary visa and permanent residence do not have the same transfer deadline.
Will translating my Chinese licence let me skip the driving tests?
No. Translation makes the licence readable in English; it does not create a test exemption. Use the official overseas licence checker3 with your licence status, issuing country, age and time holding the licence. China is covered by the checker's Other option; Hong Kong and Taiwan have separate options.
For example, a person aged 20 or over with a current China-issued licence held for more than three years is directed to the car-licence transfer route requiring tests4. That route involves a theory test, a temporary driving permit, a hazard perception test and a practical driving assessment before the final application. Use your own answers in the checker rather than assuming this example covers every licence holder.
What documents should I prepare for Service SA?
For the tested car-licence route above, prepare your overseas licence, its approved English translation and the completed licence application form. After passing the practical assessment, the final application also requires your certificate of competency and payment of the licence fee. Follow the official step-by-step document list4 for the stage you are at.
You also need to meet Service SA's identity requirements5: at least one primary document and two additional primary or secondary documents, together establishing your name, date of birth, signature and current South Australian residential address. A current overseas passport together with a current Australian visa and visa grant notice is one listed primary-document combination. Check the accepted formats and supporting documents before attending.
Can I drive in Adelaide while my translation or transfer is being arranged?
Only while you still meet the conditions for driving on your overseas licence. If it is not in English, carry the current licence with the required translation or International Driving Permit. Ordering a translation does not provide a grace period or extend your driving entitlement. The SA driving rules2 also require you to comply with your licence conditions and not be disqualified from driving in any country.
If Service SA issues you a temporary driving permit during conversion, follow that permit's conditions and expiry date. The tested transfer route4 requires the practical test to be completed before the permit expires.
How do I order my Chinese driver licence translation?
Use the Chinese driver licence order page, upload clear and complete images of the front and back of your licence, and provide your name as it appears in your passport. The standard translation is delivered by email, so you can arrange it online from Adelaide. Check the order page for any optional extras you choose, or ask about a different format before ordering.
