The translation lets the receiving organisation review the names, dates, notarial matter, issuing notary office, seals, signatures and attachments.

Important notes

An English translation attached by a Chinese notary office is not automatically the same as a NAATI-certified translation. Check whether the receiving organisation accepts the complete existing Chinese-and-English document before ordering an additional translation.
If further NAATI translation is requested, or Chinese content remains untranslated, confirm the required translation scope. Do not omit attachments or English pages from the review copy.
Translation is separate from notarisation, certified copies, witnessing and a court affidavit. Final acceptance depends on the receiving organisation’s current requirements.

Frequently asked questions

My Chinese notarial certificate already has English text. Do I still need a NAATI translation?

Not automatically. First check whether the receiving organisation accepts your complete existing Chinese-and-English document.
If it requires an additional NAATI translation, or relevant Chinese content is not translated, confirm the required scope before ordering. An English version attached by a notary office is not automatically a NAATI-certified translation.

Does the Department of Home Affairs accept electronic NAATI translations?

For an online application, follow the Home Affairs attachment instructions and the document checklist for your application when submitting the PDF translation.
Provide the Chinese source document and English translation where required. If a case officer requests a certified copy, original or hard copy, follow that specific request.

Can I translate only the notarial statement and skip the attachments?

Provide the complete certificate and all attachments for review before deciding the translation scope.
Attachments, seals, signatures, dates, page numbers and notes may all be relevant. Include existing English pages too; do not assume that every English page needs to be translated again.
